Stakeholders’ Perception of Social and Environmental Accounting and Reporting on the Financial Performance of Companies Listed on the Nigeria Stock Exchange
This research focused on the perceptions of stakeholders on the effect of social and environmental
accounting and reporting on the profitability of listed Nigerian companies. The study employed the
descriptive research design. The population for the study was 103, comprising of stock brokers at
the floor of the Nigerian stock exchange, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. The sample size is 87, arrived at
using the taro yamannes formula. Simple random sampling technique was then employed in
determining the respondents for the study. An instrument titled “Social and Environmental
Reporting and Profitability Questionnaire” (SERPQ) was used for data collection. The instrument
was validated and tested for reliability using cronbach alpha technique. Regression analysis was
used to answer the research questions. Findings reveals that there is a significant influence of social
and Environmental Accounting reporting on Organizational Financial Performance. It was
recommended among others that social and environmental expenditures incurred by corporations
should be classified into capital expenditures (e.g.,purchasing a new recycling machine, tree
plantation, soil remediation) and operating expenditures (e.g., annual operating and maintenance
cost).
